A tragic road crash last night claimed two lives and left eight others injured in Mazuba, Maganda Sub County, along the busy Iganga-Mbale Highway in Namutumba District. The fatal accident, which occurred on March 25, 2025, involved three vehicles, including a Tata Lorry (UBQ 901S), a Toyota Hiace (UBJ 358P), and an unidentified third vehicle.
Micheal Kananura Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety says Preliminary police reports indicate that the driver of the Toyota Hiace was speeding and attempted a dangerous overtaking maneuver near the Tata Lorry.
He says In a bid to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle, the Hiace swerved violently, sideswiping the lorry. The impact sheared off the roof of the Hiace, sending it into a deadly roll. Two passengers died on the spot, while eight others sustained serious injuries.
Kananura says resure teams rushed the injured to Iganga Hospital for urgent medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the hospital’s mortuary. Authorities confirmed that the driver of the Toyota Hiace fled the scene and remains at large. Police have launched a manhunt as investigations continue.
He says as Traffic police they have condemned the reckless driving that led to the crash, emphasizing the dangers of speeding and improper overtaking. “This was a preventable tragedy,” said a police spokesperson. “We urge all motorists to respect speed limits, exercise patience, and avoid risky maneuvers that endanger lives.”
Witnesses or anyone with information on the fleeing driver are urged to contact local authorities. Meanwhile, road safety advocates have called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to curb rampant speeding on Ugandan highways.
As families mourn the lives lost, this incident serves as yet another grim reminder of the consequences of reckless driving.
