Violence broke out during the NRM party LC1 elections at Gangama cell, Nkoma ward, Northern City Division, Mbale City.
The incident was attributed to disputes over voters not listed in the NRM village register.
Supporters of incumbent candidate Buruhan Tafuga accused the village registrar of allowing unregistered voters to participate. Tensions escalated, prompting intervention from the Resident City Commissioner’s office and police to restore order.
Salimu Mayabi, was declared the winner, disputed the allegations, stating that all voters were registered NRM members. He claimed Tafuga’s supporters were unfamiliar with some voters in the area, despite being legitimate NRM members from Gangama cell.
Some NRM members, like Ronald Nayele, cited poor leadership and lack of government services, such as mosquito nets and PDM support, as reasons for voting against Tafuga. Rebecca Kabubu alleged irregularities, claiming Mayabi won with over 1,000 votes but Tafuga’s supporters caused violence.
Yahaya Were, Deputy RCC for Northern City Division, acknowledged the violence but stated that elections were largely peaceful across the city. He confirmed intervening in Gangama cell to restore order and ensure the election’s continuation.
