A tragic incident occurred in Alelesi village, Chelekura Sub-county, Pallisa district, where a mob killed a 28-year-old man accused of theft on Friday.
The deceased has been identified as Simon Ayemun , alias Ebuking, who was allegedly lynched by villagers after being caught with a stolen metallic savings box containing Sh2.5 million belonging to the Children of Addo Stella savings group.
According to Bukedi North police spokesperson Wilfred Kyapasa on Sunday Ayemun broke into Addo Stella’s house and stole the savings box.
He adds that the children, who were home, raised an alarm, prompting villagers to chase Simon for about a kilometer before apprehending him. He was then beaten to death with stones and sticks.
The PRao says the LC1 chairperson reported the incident to Agule Police Station, and a case of murder by the mob was registered.
A team of police officers, led by the Acting District CID Officer and District SOCO, visited the crime scene, documented evidence, and recorded statements from witnesses. The body was taken to Pallisa Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
The police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding Simon’s death, with inquiries ongoing to identify the suspects involved in the mob action.
