Bugisu Cooperative Union (BCU) has passed a resolution to evict all police posts operating from their primary societies. This decision was made today Friday during their annual general meeting, where hundreds of coffee farmers gathered at the BCU head offices at Doho, Industrial city division in Mbale city.
According to Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the Chairperson of BCU, the presence of police posts in their primary societies has led to a significant decline in coffee collection.
He says the police posts have allegedly taken over spaces meant for coffee storage, leaving farmers with nowhere to store their produce.
John Musila, the Vice Chairperson of BCU, stated that they have requested the police to start paying rent and arrears if they wish to continue operating from the primary societies.
Musila says this move aims to generate revenue for the union and support its activities.
He adds that eviction exercise is expected to commence soon, after formal notification to the Uganda Police.
Isiah Sasaga Wanzira, a member of parliament and BCU director Sironko valley zone , emphasized that this resolution is part of the union’s plan to increase coffee production and collection.
Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, declined to comment on the resolution.
The eviction process typically involves providing written notice to the tenant, in this case, the police, specifying the reason for eviction and the deadline to vacate the premises.
