The Bukedi Development Consortium (BUDECO) has started convening implementation meetings for the Strategic Plan of Bukedi at local government levels in Bukedi.
The first meeting was convened in Masafu Town Council in Busia district where BUDECO leadership met with the locals and local leaders of the district to discuss the process and the future of the Development Plan.
According to Dr Kisaale James, the Chairman of BUDECO, as the implementing agency of the Strategic Plan, these meetings are aimed at reaching everyone in the districts of Bukedi to embrace the the plan and ensure that every home can be able to earn at least 30 million shillings annually in the next 15 years.
“We’re looking at getting commitment from farmers to implement the 4 value chains like cocoa growing, coffee growing as the Bukedi’s main cash crops, aquaculture and poultry farming since they yield swiftly while waiting for the cocoa and coffee yields.” added Dr. Kisaale.
Steven Wasike Mugenyi, the Busia district Chairperson says the Strategic Plan is timely as Bukedi is lagging behind in development.
“As a district, we also put up a development plan like construction of roads, marijuana processing plant, tomato sauce processing factory among others for the job and development opportunities for the district.” Wasike supplemented.
Macho Geoffrey, the Busia Municipality member of parliament says the 4 Value Chains of the Strategic Development Plan like poultry farming, aquaculture, coffee growing and cocoa growing gives Bukedi people the right direction to development and middle income status
Dr Monica Musenero Masanza, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation who was the Chief Guest says the plan was agreed on by all leaders in Bukedi as the elevation programme for the sub region from poverty. She however warned politicians against a parasitic campaigning version where they focus on gifting voters with small money and basic needs but they should spread the gospel of the Strategic Plan for people to embrace it.
“As you’re approaching these people for votes, teach them on the Strategic Plan implementation than giving them pieces of soap, sugar and others.” Musenero added.
The Bukedi Sub-Region Strategic Plan for Accelerated Wealth Creation (2024-2040) comes at a pivotal time for Uganda’s development. This comprehensive roadmap seeks to transform the Bukedi Sub-region into a prosperous economic hub by the year 2040.
This ambitious plan is built upon the principles of scientific innovation, value chain analysis, and sustainable development-all aimed at elevating household incomes to over UGX 30 million annually.
