The Butaleja district local government has purchased for Two silage(animal feeds) cutting machines, aimed at boosting animal feeding in the season of draught across the district.
The machines, are basically used for chopping(cutting grass), for animals for easy consumption.
Amina Dugo, the district Probation officer, identified the machines as Forage chopper. She praised the machines for being powerful, to the extent of producing atleast 16 tonnes of silage (chopped grass) per hour. She said that the Forage choppers will benefit any farmers across the district, on hire.
She further said that it’s a great solution for the farmers during the hot season, and explained that such grass, when chopped, can be mixed with Mollaces (Sukari gulu), buried into the soil for future use, when the pasture gets scarse. The officer stated that such grass is a good boost for milk production.
Ms. Dugo, also revealed that it cost the Butaleja district local government 34 Millions to buy the two Forage choppers; off the grants which the government of Uganda usually gives the department of production.
Stephen Weere, the district focal person of Parish development model, said that the purchase of the Forage choppers, is in line with the arrangements of parish development model.
He advised the community members waiting to get Parish development model money, to take dairy farming as a priority.
Mr. Weere, argued that the worsening climate changes, and population pressure have limited pasture, but Forage chopping/ cutting machines are a great solution.
