In commemoration of World Environment Day today 21March ,Mt. Elgon Tree Planting Enterprises the non government organisation has today Friday planted over 200 indigenous fruit tree seedlings at Watsemba Primary School in Industrial City Division, Mbale City.
According to Yusufu Makabuli, a staff member at Mt. Elgon Tree Planting Enterprises, the school was chosen because of the need to replace trees that had been cut down.
Makabuli noted that many schools in Mbale City lack trees, which are essential for providing windbreaks, oxygen, shade, and fruit.
“Following the planting at Watsemba Primary School, the organization plans to donate additional free indigenous tree seedlings to residents across the Bugisu region as part of their environmental conservation efforts” Mr Makabuli said .
He said they are promoting indigenous trees because they are friendly to environment and has hard wood which are very expensive.
Khariate Nambozo, the head teacher of Watsemba Primary School, expressed her gratitude for the tree-planting initiative, highlighting the benefits of preventing wind damage and providing fruit for the children.
She mentioned that the school had previously lost trees due to timber harvesting and other uses, and they are now committed to replanting and restoring the school’s tree cover.
