Butaleja: The farmers in Butaleja district, have been advised to plant fast growing crops, and trees, accompanied with fertilizers, to boost food security and livelihood.
Junior Henry Tuke, a prominent farmer, environmentalist, also a businessman, now turning into a politician, in a telephone interview with East fm on Tuesday, said that the climatic changes call for calculated farming.
He encouraged the farmers to plant a variety of food and cash crops, and suggested for increased planting of cassava, regardless of its low cost apparently.
He advised them to learn smart processing, for a better market of the agricultural produce.
According to Tuke, some farmers cry foul of the low prices for the produce because they often dry them poorly, or harvest prematurely. Mr. Tuke, condemned those who often dry their food on bare floor, stressing that the tycoons cherish healthy food stuff without sand, bad smell, and in its original colour; hence the price fluctuations.
He, nevertheless, broke the news that some Chinese are traversing the country in search for cassava, preferably of a good grade, with reasonable prices.
Mr. Tuke, also called for serious tree planting in Butaleja district. He called for planting of fast growing trees which can help change the climate, be used for timber, firewood and wind breaking.
Tuke Henry, is also famous for having large plantations of Cocoa and coffee. He has been key in encouraging the farmers to embrace coffee and cocoa growing, considering the availability of good market for the crops.
