The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Mbale campus, has scheduled May 21st to celebrate World Press Freedom Day in the Bugisu region. The event is being organized by the Islamic University Mass Communication Students Association (IUMCSA).
According to Rehema Katono, IUIU’s Public Relations Officer, during a press conference today Wednesday at the campus says this marks the first time the day will be celebrated in the Bugisu region, despite the presence of numerous journalists in the area.
The celebration aims to bring together journalists from various media platforms to share challenges and advocate for press freedom.
Rashid Kabiji, an IUIU mass communication lecturer and IUIU FM News Editor, highlighted the difficulties journalists face while gathering news, including physical harm, imprisonment, and assault.
He emphasized that the celebration will provide an opportunity for journalists to collectively address these challenges with the government and relevant authorities.
Mulushid Walujo, President of IUMCSA and Big FM Manager, noted that press freedom in Uganda is limited, hindering journalists’ ability to work independently.
In preparation for the celebration, journalists are conducting radio talk shows to inform the public about the importance of media and journalism in society.
