NEMA Starts 5 Year Tree Planting Project in Mt. Elgon Slopes

As a way to combat disasters in Bugisu region, National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has put in place a 5 year plan of tree planting at all slopes of Mount Elgon.
The Bugisu region has become famous for being prone to landslides every year when it rain.
This was revealed by the executive director of NEMA, Barirega Akankwasah during a one day engagement meeting with journalists from different regions across the country on how to report about environment related stories at hotel 360degrees in Ndejje.
Barirega revealed that the five year project has already started and will run in all districts in Elgon region.
He says that NEMA is breeding a number of different local tree species at Busiu Town Council in Mbale district where they have put project offices for people to pick for planting.

Akankwasah also says when these trees are planted at Mount Elgon slopes, they hope to see a reduction of landslides because the main cause of landslides is deforestation.
William Lubuulwa, the the communication officer at NEMA urged people from Elgon region to embrace the five year plan as the only way of curbing down disasters in Bugisu.
Meanwhile, Akankwasah declared a ban of giving wetlands to any investor starting December, 2024.
While responding to questions from journalists about what the government will do with the current Industrial parks and other projects in wetlands, he said there is nothing NEMA can do about those projects already in wetland
