The National Unity Platform (NUP) party, led by Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has initiated a nationwide mobilization effort to establish resistance groups, known as “Egali,” in preparation for the 2026 general election.
These groups, comprising youths wearing attire similar to Uganda’s defense forces, have sparked controversy due to concerns over their resemblance to military uniforms.
While speaking to hundreds of NUP leaders from Elgon region yesterday Monday at St Andrews cathedral, Bobi Wine stated that the Egali groups will help protect votes from various areas during the 2026 elections.
He says the NUP party has started mobilizing in Kampala and plans to extend the effort to all regions across the country.
NUP leaders from the Elgon region also endorsed Bobi Wine as the party’s sole candidate for the presidency in the 2026 general election.
Loice Lubongoya, the party’s General Secretary, urged supporters to acquire party cards to become legitimate members and contest for positions in the upcoming elections.
Haji Masa Musa, former LC3 Chairperson of Industrial City Division and a key figure in the Mbale city FDC stronghold, defected to NUP during the event leaving shock in the city.
The formation of Egali groups has raised concerns due to their resemblance to military attire, which the government has previously conflicted with.
Bobi Wine’s NUP has been vocal about election integrity and protecting citizens’ rights, often finding itself at odds with the government.
