The Mbale City Police have today Friday arrested a 37-year-old man, only identified as Derrick, a resident of Namatala ward in Industrial City Division, over allegations of aiding in the recruitment of over 20 underaged children for illegal activities.
According to Jimmy Nambiro, Assistant Resident City Commissioner for Industrial City Division, who led the arrest, parents of the children alerted him that on Saturday last week Derrick had lured their children with 100,000/= each, promising them construction jobs in Soroti City with good pay.
However, instead of taking them to Soroti, the children were taken to different an undisclosed location.
Geoffrey Wabwire, a parent from Namatala, reported that his son, a Senior Three student at Mbale Secondary School, was taken by Derrick without his knowledge.
Wabwire said his son had called him and told he was going for military training at Kidepo National Park.
Another parent, Justine Bulieli, urged the police to not only prosecute Derrick but also to identify and apprehend the person who took their children, so they could be safely returned.
Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, promised to provide a comment after being briefed on all the facts of the case.
By press time Derick was still at Namatala police station.
