On Wednesday, April 2, 2025, senior police officers from the Elgon Sub-Region conducted a counseling session at Nkoma Secondary School for senior two students. Superintendent Birungi Lydia, who heads the Child and Family Affairs department in the Elgon Sub-Region, emphasized the importance of addressing physical and emotional abuse.

“We are here to interact with learners who may be facing challenges, including torture by teachers and parents. Our major goal is to empower them with knowledge so that they can prevent and also know the best procedures for reporting incidents without fear if they occur,” she said.
Superintendent Birungi Lydia highlighted the alarming rate of young girls being deceived and exploited, leading to tragic consequences. “We’ve lost many young girls due to manipulation. Our visit aims to educate them on their rights, how to avoid violating laws, and how to excel academically.”
Superintendent Birungi Lydia was accompanied by Superintendent Namuyindi Zaituna and Superintendent Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Sub-Region spokesperson. Mr. Taitika appealed to the learners to desist from acts that can cause them to drop out of school. He instead asked them to observe discipline in order to enjoy their adulthood productively.
Ms. Namuyindi reminded the students that they are now of age and can be prosecuted. She also asked them to avoid criminal acts such as arson, theft, assaults, and sexual-related offenses.
Madam Sarah Nansikombi, the deputy headteacher in charge of Guidance and Counseling, appreciated the Uganda Police for sensitizing the learners. She hopes for a great change in the students and also promises to work hand-in-hand with the police to produce well-rounded citizens.
With over 6,000 students, Nkoma Secondary School is one of the most densely populated schools in the Bugisu Sub-region. This counseling program has the potential to cause a positive, significant change in shaping the learners’ characters for a better Uganda.
The officers assured the learners that the sessions are ongoing.
