Consequently, Nyamusana was crowned Miss Mbale 2013-2014. The crown came with a sh1m prize, while the first runner up, Zac Lillian, walked off with sh500,000. The second runner up, Linda Carol, got sh300,000.
The beauty pageant, organised by Miss Mbale Savings and Credit Organisation, was held at Thatch Gardens in Mbale town over the weekend. Gates were open by 8pm and the Mbale folks, being the party lovers they are, started trickling in much earlier to drink up.
A white banner strapped across the gate of the venue proclaimed that top musicians Iryn Namubiru, Young Mulo and Dr. Hilderman were among the artists expected to perform at the occasion. But none of showed up for the function .
In their place, much to the annoyance of revellers who had thronged the joint expecting robust performance from top artists, were local upcoming artists who were angrily booed off the stage.
“Gwe! Vayo, twakukowa dda! Onno boyi yasokera Mbale wano, sitegi ne emulema. Na assenguka e Kampala ate ne bimulema. Kkati ali ttumalira obude wano (Get off the stage! This boy started performing music here in Mbale and failed to make an impression. He shifted to Kampala but still failed to make a breakthrough),” a visibly irritated man yelled.
Never mind it was a beauty pageant not music show! The MCs of the night, John K and Cassy Desire, being the compatible pair they were, made up for the glitch, often cracking jokes that lit up revellers.
Despite the sloppy stage with a steep staircase that kept contestants ‘fighting’ to get on the podium, the beauties never disappointed.
The crowd favourite of the eleven, was undoubtedly Evas Amuge, alias Bad Black. Revellers went wild whenever she paraded on stage. Her mosquito net creative wear was off the hook, in what she explained was a gesture to fight the killer malaria disease.
Perhaps this explains why the highlights of the night, according to Moses Masaba, one of the judges, were the creative wears.
“Some of the creative wears that these contestants did can even outcompete what’s normally paraded at the national competition,” Masaba said.
