Butaleja: The Assistant RDC for Butaleja district, Godfrey Musulemi Nasuga, has stopped indefinitely, the supply of chicken to the farmers in Busabi sub county, whose pieces of land were sliced under the restoration program for wetland in Butaleja district.
The Assistant RDC, who represented the Fountain of honor(President Museveni), in the program, says that he was dismayed by the nature of the chicken which were procured for his people.
According to Mr. Nasuga, the district Veterinary officer, and Natural resources officer, supported by UNDP(United Nations Development Program), presented a total of 1,956 birds, and 15 pigs.
1,225 chicken were below a Month; and only 725 were over a Month old. Nasuga discredited the chicken, arguing that such birds will give hard time for vaccination and feeding to the local farmers.
He thus directed the supplier and the District veterinary officer, to return those immature birds and source mature ones for his people.
Out of the 50 farmers who were meant to benefit from the livelihood alternative, only 29, got the chicken.
But the pigs were of good quality and were given out accordingly.
The farmers, affected in the wetland restoration program in Busabi sub county, are supposed to get heifers, fish, goats, pigs and chicken; in phases. They so far received goats, and some hens, awaiting other enterprises applied for.
Some of the beneficiaries, praised Mr. Nasuga, for his intervation, shouting him as “our man”, because they thought it would be criminal if they dared to deny the immature chics supplied to them.
However, Jackson Twebaze Ndahayo, the Butaleja district Veterinary Officer, says that he is the one who stopped the supply of immature chics. He said that he selected 725 mature chicken for the few of the Busabi farmers who applied for poultry, under the alternative livelihood program.
Ndahayo, also reported that they received a total of 1,950 chicken and 14 pigs for the respective farmers who applied to have those enterprises to boost their livelihood.
